Mp3 sites come and go. There are thousands of small sites by enthusiasts. here are my personal favorites. Recently there has been a major movememnt of small bands distributing their music via the web. Please note all of the below sites distribute legal mp3s only.

layer3.org one of my favorite sites, contains an enourmous collection of mp3 software as well as the ever poppular "winamp mangled" skins section, however will not be updated again untill Septerber, webmaster working for the summer.

howto.layer3.org terrific reference on how to encode mp3s, also provides a quick example on how to hook up a stereo system to your computer. I now have nice 25" speakers, great surround sound.

mp3bench.com  mp3 benchmark test for players encoders and the rest. Terrific content, very thorough with graphs and explanations, also explores new technology such as aac and vqf.

mp3.com ok.. well this page is actually run by filez it has great content and provides an "official homepage" for mp3s however the company appears to be involved in the domain trade of buying and re-selling domains such as winamp.com macamp.com soundvq.com and many other non-mp3 related domains.

dimensionmusic.com  the site I turned to after the outer limits, used to focus on illegal content, however currently appears to have become almost a corporate enterprise with ties to mp3.com worldkey.com mircx.com nordicms.com and nad.interpret.org (who dm owns). It still has great content and the message board however its not the same. DM at one point was one of the most illegal sites I've ever seen with its own mp3 stocked t1 and t3 servers. Spyed has done a lot with dm, give him credit for that.

kosmic.org the biggest legal mp3 distribution movement, lots of unknown artists with mp3 encoded audio. This is deffinately a step in the right direction showing the power of digital audio sidtribution. Perhaps the music industry will catch on, who knows

viperz.com  to tell you the truth I don't like the site. This is one of those "turned legal" Like mine I guess ;) Has localy hosted legal mp3s, sound clips and full length parodies. But as I see it, not enough content
