Thanks! I have found some Masis people currently in Lithuania and Armenia. As well some references to masis in Barcelona around the 1700′s, not any later. In Costa Rica there are Masis as far as 1680 in the baptismal records of the city of Cartago. According to some historica, records the latinamerican version of Masis might be of sephardic origin. Still, it remains a mistery, and the references are too spread out geographically to actually reach a conclusion (or afford to do it).
Regards
Guillermo
Hey I was actually googling my last name and I found this website wich seems to be your personal website.. anyways,I just wanted to let you know that your not he only Masis trying to find the origin of there last name.. well I just thought it would be cool to leave a little message.
The Masis name can be found throughout the mediterranean. There is a city in southern Greece with this name. Italians, Spanish and Greeks also use the name as a last name. Its derivation appears to be from the arameic name Maso, which is a short form of the name Tommaso. The name Tommaso or Thomas is derived from the Arameic “toma” which means twin. Other names associated with Masis are: Masi, Maselli, Masini, Maso, Masoni, Masotti, Masutti. In the Spanish tradition this last name appears to have been used before the 16th Century.

Hi Guillermo,
I don’t know the origin of the Masis name for sure, however my best guess is that it may trace back to a mountain in Turkey, see http://www.masis.am/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Ararat
I have gotten several emails from people with the same last name in South and Central America as well.
